Early Bird Priority Registration for 2017-18 Child Care

1 2

For years, child care families have “camped out” at the crack of dawn on a Saturday in August to ensure a spot in Sun ‘N Fun or Club STAR for the following year. After listening to family feedback, Youth Services staff adjusted the registration process. Recognizing the need to first provide peace-of-mind to currently enrolled families, staff now host a “Priority Family Registration,” a 4-day window for families who are currently enrolled to re-register for the next school year (and families only need to complete 3 updated forms as opposed to completing again the entire 12 page packet required by State Licensing). On the days of April 25-28, child care staff were available at program sites to help currently enrolled families through the quick 10-minute registration process, either at the lunch hour or end of the day. Over 450 families partook of this opportunity and left with assurance that they have child care next year.

Currently Child Care staff are promoting the child care programs at each of the school site’s Kinder Round Up, ensuring incoming Kinder families know about the City child care opportunities. Next steps will include two Kinder Family Registrations, held at the Parks and Recreation office on May 19 (for CL Smith, Hawthorne and Sinsheimer Schools) and June 2 (for Bishop’s Peak, Pacheco and all other new-to-the-program families) from 7:30 am – 1 pm. After June 2, registration will remain closed until general registration opens in August, given available space.

Based on the high attendance numbers and waitlists this past year, wait lists are expected; however, staff have re-worked policies with the intent that child care is available to those families needing it on a regular basis.
