"The Community Academy offers a great opportunity for our
citizens to learn the fundamentals and some of the 'inside'
information about how our municipality works. We are proud of our
strong tradition of public participation in all of our
decision-making at City Hall, and we all agree with Thomas
Jefferson's maxim that an informed citizenry is essential for a

Would you like to
know how your City government works? Would you like to learn
more about how the City's budget is developed, the relationship
between the City Manager and the City Council, or
the basic functions of the Community Development Department?
For answers to
these types of questions and others,
the 2011 Community Academy, an educational program
that provides the citizens of San Luis Obispo with the opportunity to
gain additional knowledge about municipal government.
Classes will help
participants understand the many facets of local government roles and how they interact to form a
strong and effective body. Sessions range from City
organization and funding to police and fire services, and will
culminate in a mock City Council meeting that will apply everything
here for Program Information
Classes will be
held on seven consecutive Thursday evenings (or as noted) from 5:30 to
p.m. A City tour, graduation ceremony and lunch will be held on
the Saturday, November 5, 2011.
There is no fee to
attend the Academy, however, class size will be limited so early
registration is encouraged. Classes are open to all City
residents of voting age. Due to limited space, attendance at all
sessions is expected.
