Earth Month - Fix Your Stuff, Fix the Planet

  • Date: 04/13/2024 2:00 PM - 2:45 PM
  • Location: San Luis Obispo Library Community Room
    995 Palm Street
    San LuisObispo, California 93401
  • Introduction: Electronic waste is an enormous problem: The world makes more than 48 million tons of e-waste every year. One part of the answer? Fixing what we’ve got instead of throwing it away.

Make your way to SLO Library to hear how Right to Repair got passed in California, why that’s good news for the planet, and what’s next in the fight for more fixable stuff. Then stick around to watch or raise your screwdriver in a repair race, for a chance to win some iFixit gear: Compete to disassemble a modern electronic device. Tools provided.

It’s harder to fix things than it should be, but that’s about to get better in California. In July, a Right to Repair law goes into effect in California—passed in part due to the work of SLOcal company iFixit.

iFixit started in 2003 in the Cal Poly dorm rooms when Kyle Wiens dropped an iBook off his bed, broke the power plug, and couldn’t find a guide for how to fix it. Twenty years later, iFixit has over 100,000 step-by-step repair guides, is the official parts distributor for Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones, and is fighting for your right to fix everything you own.
