Revitalizing Parking and Transportation Access in San Luis Obispo

A street parking pay station and the entrance to a parking structure downtown.

On February 21, 2023, City Council approved an updated Access and Parking Management Plan establishing 35 new strategies that align with the City’s Downtown Concept Plan, Active Transportation Plan, and Mobility Specific Plan, and support the City’s climate action goal of achieving communitywide carbon neutrality by 2035. Another point of focus is supporting downtown businesses and employee transportation needs.

Access and Parking Management Plan

This project will address access, parking, and travel options, today and into the future. Everyone living in, working in, and visiting San Luis Obispo is a key partner, and there will be several opportunities to get involved and help shape the final recommendations. Additionally, community members are always encouraged to leave feedback to department via our email at parkinginfo@slocity.org

This webpage will serve as our primary project hub with information on regular project updates and different ways to share your thoughts. Updates and surveys will also be posted on the City's social media platforms.

About this Project

We will be studying how people access businesses, homes, cultural spaces, and other points of interest around downtown San Luis Obispo and in residential neighborhoods. We want to explore strategies to make our City’s parking supply more efficient and better integrated with our sustainable transportation goals.

The project plan will recommend best parking management strategies for visitors, employees, and residents. In addition, it will explore innovate ways of managing curb space for deliveries, bikeshare, scooters, and gathering spaces such as parklets.

The updated plan will serve as a guiding document for the City and community partners to think more holistically about access and parking throughout the City. The plan will also include strategies to balance competing demands for curbside spaces, incorporation of new parking designs, and address future mobility options. The study will result in actions that make real improvements in the daily lives of people who live, work, and play in the City.
