About the Mural
The massive mural covers two walls in the parking lot behind the historic Fremont Theater in downtown San Luis Obispo, facing the high traffic corridor of Higuera Street. This mural will hopefully add to our community’s sense of place and pride, while also serving as a destination art piece and fostering downtown revitalization. The visionary behind the mural is Maria Molteni, a a Nashville-born, Boston-based multimedia and performing artist, educator, and organizer.

About the City's Public Art Program
San Luis Obispo's Public Art Program helps us create a vibrant community where people want to live, work and visit. By honoring San Luis Obispo’s community identity, the City's public art connects community members and visitors to San Luis Obispo’s shared history and cultural heritage. The City sets aside 1% of capital improvement plan funds for public art projects. Currently, the City’s Public Art Program consists of more than 100 unique pieces of art, ranging from murals, mosaics, oil and watercolor paintings, utility box art, stained glass, sculptures, benches, bridge railings and more. In July 2021, the City entered into a community partnership agreement with the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art to coordinate various public art projects for San Luis Obispo for the next two years. Through this unique agreement the Museum is engaging regional and national artists to install several public art projects in downtown San Luis Obispo, existing and future roundabouts, and a neighborhood greenway.

About the Artist
Boston-based multimedia & performing artist, educator, and organizer Maria Molteni has attended residencies at Elsewhere (Greensboro, NC) Mildred’s Lane (Pennsylvania), PS1 MoMA Studios (LIC, NY) and the Berwick Research Institute’s Bumpkin Island Art Encampment (Boston Harbor, MA). They have participated in the collective action of Danza Organica, Occupy Boston, and the Institute for Infinitely Small Things. Having exhibited in alternative spaces such as MEME (Cambridge, MA) and Proof Gallery (Boston, MA) Molteni has also exhibited in the Museum of Fine Arts + Institute of Contemporary Art (Boston), the Harvard Museum of Natural History, Université Laval (Québec City), Otis College of Art and Design (LA, CA), the Mattress Factory (Pittsburgh, PA), and the Office of Culture and Design, (Manila, The Philippines).
