The City of San Luis Obispo provides numerous channels to engage and inform the community. Specifically, the City strives for:
- To engage with their customers in an environment already familiar and popular with the customer with timely and appropriate bi-directional correspondence
- To make it simpler and more efficient for citizens to get in touch with the Government
- To gain real-time customer sentiment, language, needs and informed future trends
- That provides strategic direction for broad marketing and communications campaigns
- That leverages off the framework and tools already established and maintained by social media platforms
- That provides customers with the mobility to interact with the government via social apps no matter where they are or what time it is
- That encourages transparency and promotes reliability, confidence and trust in the customer experience
- To help guide conversations in real-time, either by reinforcing positive feedback or by diffusing negative comments through using timely, moderated, direct engagement
- To facilitate and support agencies to network around common threads and issues.
The principles are designed to be flexible yet provide a professional, friendly and consistent experience for community members wishing to interact with the City through social media channels. Local government, even online, is people serving people.

Standards of Public Conduct
We encourage community members and users in general to engage with the cities social media channels but will remove the following types of posts regardless of intent or context:
- Comments that violate the City's Code of Civility;
- Off-topic comments;
- Solicitations of commerce;
- Profane language or content;
- Content that promotes, fosters, or perpetuates discrimination of any kind;
- Threatening or defamatory comments;
- Sexual content or links to sexual content;
- Comments which violate the privacy of community members or city business
- Comments infringing on copyrighted or trademarked material;
- Conduct or encouragement of illegal activity;
- Information that may tend to compromise the safety or security of the public.
City officers and employees will strictly abide by these guidelines and encourage a digital environment where respectful and positivity is, and will always be, the norm.
While the City of San Luis Obispo makes reasonable efforts to monitor and moderate content posted on Online Content platforms, neither the City of San Luis Obispo nor its employees or other affiliated individuals always have the ability to moderate all comments and cannot always respond immediately to online requests for information. However, the city will make all reasonable attempts to remove comments in a timely manner.
The City of San Luis Obispo reserves the right to delete comments and endorsements displaying offensive content that are contrary to the high standards of the City. Additionally, the City reserves the right to delete comments that are misleading and do not support the objective of providing accurate, relevant and timely information to the public.
