Traditionally, Economic Development has included things like business retention and attraction, as well as site selection and general facilitation of the relationship between business and government. The community and civic leaders in San Luis Obispo recognize that, in order to continue to improve the amazing quality of life and develop our economy, more than just traditional Economic Development was needed. In 2012, the City created its first Economic Development Strategic Plan. This living document has created the framework to move the City forward.

The City has also recognized that Tourism is critical to economic vitality of the City and has dedicated Tourism Manager that is part of the Economic Development Program.
