2024 World Day of Remembrance

World Day of Remembrance logoCity officials will join the community at the World Day of Remembrance memorial event tomorrow to honor those who have lost their lives or been injured in road traffic accidents.

This year, the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments (SLOCOG) will host its first inaugural World Day of Remembrance in SLO County. The community memorial and road safety program will take place in front of the SLO County Courthouse on November 17th from 12:00pm to 1:30pm with a press conference to follow.

The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims in SLO County honors those who have lost their lives or been injured in road traffic accidents. This day offers support to those impacted by these tragedies and seeks to raise awareness about their lasting effects. SLOCOG will be sharing updates on the County’s Road to Zero Safety Transportation Plan, highlighting efforts to improve road safety, and invites you to complete a survey with your feedback on road safety concerns.

In 2016, the City made a commitment to zero traffic deaths within city limits when the City Council adopted the Vision Zero policy. The City’s Public Works Department is working on a Vision Zero Action Plan, which will focus on what the City can do to prevent the most severe types of traffic collisions in City limits. The City Council is expected to review and consider adopting this plan in spring 2025. The draft plan will be published for public review and comment before the end of 2024. Community members can get more details at www.slocity.org/TrafficSafety.

Additionally, this observance serves as a reminder for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians in our community to prioritize safety on the roads.

On World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, a record number of U.S. Communities will join together in solidarity to urge action to address the nation’s historic and preventable roadway safety crisis. Crash survivors, grieving families, advocates, and public agency representatives are organizing events in more than 75 U.S. Communities to remember those killed and injured, and to advocate for life-saving changes at local, state, and federal levels.
