Check out what we have going on in the upcoming weeks as we continue to make progress on our ongoing neighborhood enhancement projects aimed at making our city safer, more accessible, and better connected.
Transportation, Pavement, & Mobility Improvements
Work to upgrade and add more safety improvements to key streets and intersections is still underway. See what areas we’re working on:
-
We plan to install the new piping at the end of next week starting at the Bishop and Johnson Intersection and making our way down towards Augusta Street on Bishop as part of the Johnson Waterline Project. Commuters can expect minor traffic impacts due to flagging and lane shifting. Bishop street will also be detoured.
-
We’ll continue adding street striping and markings for a few more weeks in areas where we slurry sealed. Commuters can expect no parking signs on streets where we’re striping, traffic impacts due to flagging, lane shifting, and intermittent work in the middle of the road.

Paving the Way: Why Road Marking Precision Matters
A freshly re-paved road calls for new road striping! Did you know that there are several steps to marking new pavement accurately? By taking these steps, crews reduce the chance of costly mistakes and ensure that the newly paved road is safe, long-lasting, and ready to serve the community for years to come.
The first step to adding new striping usually starts with a set of temporary markings, which serve as a rough draft for lane placements, crosswalks, and turn lanes. These temporary markings often wipe off easily just in case the markings need to be adjusted but are important for helping traffic flow safely and visually guiding crews as they prepare the final layout.
The second step to adding new road striping ensures accuracy. After evaluating the first set of temporary markings, crews make any necessary corrections based on visibility, lane width, and the natural road layout before making a second set of temporary markings. This step is important for ensuring that the final layout meets safety standards. By marking the road multiple times, engineers and crews can catch any minor adjustments needed before the final and permanent markings are applied.
Finally, once everything is properly aligned, crews use thermoplastic materials to make the permanent markings. See temporary markings that need to be adjusted? Contact us at sloinmotion@slocity.org.
Park Projects
Groundwork to grade the surface of the Laguna Lake Dog Park Revitalization Project is continuing. We’ve finished the sidewalks and are still working on landscape edging. Next, we plan to install the new irrigation system and plants. Construction is still expected to be complete by the spring of 2025.
Coming Soon
Please keep an eye out for orange cones and active construction sites and remember to:
Allow Extra Travel Time: Due to ongoing construction, please allow for extra travel time when navigating these areas.
Slow Down for Construction Crews: Please reduce your speed and exercise caution when driving through construction zones. Slow down if you see orange cones. Our dedicated crews are working diligently to make San Luis Obispo safer for everyone.
Why These Projects Matter
While these construction projects may create temporary disruptions, we want to emphasize their significance in shaping the future and protecting the City San Luis Obispo. Each project is community-driven and essential to our city's future. They are not just about fixing roads, creeks, and adding bike lanes; they're a vital part of our collective vision for San Luis Obispo.
Once complete, they will keep SLO in motion, keeping our infrastructure in tip-top shape, making it easier and safer for community members to get around, connecting communities, and creating healthy recreational opportunities for community members.
As you navigate through these construction zones, please remember that the inconveniences you may face today are investments in a brighter and more accessible tomorrow.
Thank you for being part of this journey with us. Together, we are shaping the future of San Luis Obispo, one project at a time.
