San Luis Obispo, as a travel destination, invites visitors to discover the true California experience the “SLO” way through pristine landscapes, unique cultural attractions, and memorable culinary discoveries. With community activities and special events happening year-around, San Luis Obispo tourism offers flavors and experiences that can’t be had elsewhere. Acclaimed as the “Happiest Place in the USA” by National Geographic, San Luis Obispo’s warm community and small-town charm offers travelers the cultural attractions, shopping and gourmet cuisine befitting of a larger city.

Tourism revenue in the form of Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) is the third largest contributor to the City’s General Fund. Positioned within the Economic Development Program, the Tourism and Community Promotions program is a major contributor to the Economic Development Strategic Plan (EDSP) initiative to promote and enhance the San Luis Obispo quality of life. The Tourism and Community Promotions Program is overseen by the City’s Tourism Manager.

The City’s Tourism and Community Promotions Program consists of the cooperative work of two advisory bodies: the Tourism Business Improvement District (TBID) and the Promotional Coordinating Committee (PCC). The division of work between these Council appointed committees is simple, the TBID is responsible for leveraging the marketing dollars through the TBID assessment for the promotion of San Luis Obispo resulting in visitors to the community and the PCC is responsible for enhancing the quality of experience within the community for residents and visitors alike. Together, the TBID and PCC also support community events through a joint an Events Promotion Program.
