Purpose, Membership and Terms

In June of 2008, the City Council adopted an ordinance establishing the TBID. The TBID allows the hotel industry to raise funds solely dedicated to tourism marketing and promotions to attract visitors to San Luis Obispo. Currently the City TBID assessment is 2%. The TBID is inclusive of all lodging properties in the City of San Luis Obispo including hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, hostels, inns and owner occupied homestays.

The Board consists of seven members from the San Luis Obispo lodging industry. One of those members serves as a representative to the Promotional Coordinating Committee. Members are appointed to four year terms and are eligible for re-appointment for an additional four years. The roster of current members, date of appointment, and date of term expiration can be reviewed on the City's Local Appointments List.

The Tourism Business Improvement District (TBID) Board advises the City Council in the administration and use of the TBID assessment funds. The Board recommends projects to promote tourism to the City of San Luis Obispo to directly benefit the City's lodging industry as represented in the 2019-24 Revised TBID Strategic Plan. The TBID works collaboratively with the City’s Promotional Coordinating Committee (PCC) to ensure that a unique SLO experience is available to visitors as well as residents and to administer the Events Promotion Program for local special event sponsorship, to assist in the development of destination events that showcase the attributes of San Luis Obispo.

The TBID also hosts the VisitSLO.com, which promotes the city as a destination and provides information to visitors including things to do, where to stay, local itineraries and upcoming events.
