Ranger-Led Events

 
Wednesday Workday:

Rangers lead volunteers performing trail maintenance and construction in City Open Spaces.  Work varies from week to week including digging with picks, shovels, and rakes; and brush cleanup using rakes, pitch forks and your hands.  This trail workday is open to all skill levels; tools, gloves and instruction are provided.  Contact ngrether@slocity.org to join.

Ranger-Led Hikes:

Once a month, rangers lead public hikes in open space, often accompanied by local experts in a variety of fields. These hikes are a great opportunity to discover the area and learn while doing so. There is no registration needed, just show up on the day of! Upcoming hikes will be posted here in advance. For questions, please contact mhendric@slocity.org for more information.

Bilingual Ranger-led Hikes:

Ranger Service is partnering with California Native Plant Society of SLO County to bring educational hikes in English and Spanish. Please check the calendar above to see when the next hike will take place!

 

Ranger-Led Mountain Biking:

Rangers lead mountain bike rides in City Open Space to provide an opportunity to learn more about local mountain biking trails and biking safety. Rides is vary in difficulty, from beginner to expert (be sure to check for a specific ride in the calendar listing description). Attendees must bring a personal bike and proper gear. Contact ajansen@slocity.org for more information.

Junior Ranger Camp

The Jr. Ranger Activity Camp (JRAC) is a week-long environmental education experience designed to teach campers about the many facets of San Luis Obispo’s natural environment. JRAC is focused on promoting environmental awareness in kids. Campers will enjoy a bit of classroom style instruction combined with outdoor hands-on learning. The Rangers will introduce the campers to basic wilderness adventure skills through play and instruction to optimize kids time spent outdoors. Rangers, along with special guest speakers from the community, will teach about coexisting in ecosystems with our four legged and winged neighbors. At the completion of each session, campers will be awarded a Jr. Ranger certificate and will be inspired to continue their outdoor education.

Location:
 Laguna Lake Park in the gazebo area, towards the end of the park. 
Days & Time: Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Cost: $161 per week

Package price includes: a full week of care, a daily schedule of activities/lessons, and morning snack.
