Coming Soon: Permanent Supportive Housing

The City of San Luis Obispo and People’s Self-Help Housing Corporation (PSHHC) have been awarded  $19 million from the California Homekey Program to buy and convert a Motel 6 into permanent housing that will help reduce and prevent homelessness in San Luis Obispo.

This Homekey grant will fund the Calle Joaquin Homekey Project, which is an essential part of the City’s Homelessness Strategic Response Plan to provide much-needed permanent supportive housing units in San Luis Obispo. The project will address a critical need in San Luis Obispo County for permanent supportive housing, situated in a location accessible to public transit and basic services.

This project is a regional capacity-building initiative to provide housing for community members experiencing homelessness, which in turn will create additional capacity at the 40 Prado Homeless Services Center.

Through the Calle Joaquin Homekey Project, barriers to stable housing for those experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness will be lowered and new permanent supportive housing options will be established, directly advancing the City's Homelessness Response Strategic Plan and the San Luis Obispo Countywide Strategic Plan to Address Homelessness.

With an anticipated completion date of early 2025, the project is scheduled to start development and construction in early 2024.

About People's Self-Help Housing's Supportive Housing Program

All services provided by People’s Self-Help Housing’s Supportive Housing Program will be free of charge, and residents will be assessed by a SHP service provider to develop a case plan to assist the resident with maintaining stable housing. Counseling services provided will include individual and crisis intervention counseling. Case management services provided will include assisting the resident with entitlements, medical care, employment, therapeutic / psychiatric services, budgeting, transportation, and any other services that will assist the resident with maintaining stable housing.

Supportive Housing Program staff use trauma-informed and culturally competent skills to work with vulnerable, low-income, residential populations, including veterans, seniors, and individuals with physical and mental disabilities. More than 98% of People’s Self-Help Housing Corporation’s residents who have received these services have been able to stabilize their housing and avoid homelessness and displacement.
